Perhaps the arrival of David Price or the trade of Drew Smyly
energized the Tiger's pitching staff. Or perhaps the Rockies just
simply suck. Whatever Anibal Sanchez shut them out with a gem of a
game. The fact he went 7 innings and threw 117 pitches and then in
the 7th where he has had some issues in the past, he got 2 Ks, gave up
a single, but got the 3rd out on a ground out.

The Tiger offense consisted of a double by Rajai Davis, hit by pitch
by Ian Kinsler, a Cabrera single and a home run by Victor Martinez all
in the 3rd inning. After that it seemed like they were in cruise
control. Joba Chamberlain allowed one hit in a shutout eighth inning,
and Joakim Soria did the same in the ninth (finally).

Whatever, the sweep was achieved. In the three-game sweep, Sanchez,
Justin Verlander and Rick Porcello combined for a 1.57 ERA with 27
strikeouts and two walks in 23 innings.

Anibal Sanchez's 7 inning, 12 strikeout, no walk performance is just
the 4th time in the last 40 years that a Tiger starter has done that.
He joins Max Scherzer who did it in 2012, Justin Verlander in 2009 and
Jack Morris in 1983. Obviously the last 3 starters to do it for
Detroit are all in their current rotation.

Andy Dirks (remember him?) went 1 for 4 for Single-A West Michigan on
his second rehab assignment to try and return from a back problem that
has kept him out all season. Dirks, who had to cut his first
assignment short in July, is hitting .286 in two games for the
Whitecaps.

Detroit travels to New York for a four-game series that will be
highlighted by David Price's first start in a Tigers uniform. In
Monday's series opener, Max Scherzer (13-3, 3.27) faces Brandon
McCarthy (6-10, 4.56).

Detroit loses this game because they again don't hit in the clutch.
It's beyond my in the ninth with the game on the line they don't pinch
hit for Avila. It's not like if they tie or go ahead there isn't a
capable replacement for Avila.
